A Conversation about creative process with Saidiya Hartman, Ralph Lemon and Geo Wyeth.
Presented by MAPP International Productions and Studio Museum in Harlem
Date: Friday, May 16th 6:30PM
Location: The Studio Museum in Harlem: 144 W 125th St
Join us at MAPP International for a special StudioLab with literary and cultural critic Saidiya Hartman, artists Ralph Lemon and Geo Wyeth, currently exhibiting work in the When the Stars Begin to Fall: Imagination and the American South exhibition. This program will accompany the mounted exhibition which queries the category of “outsider” art in relation to contemporary art and black life.
Organized in collaboration with MAPP International Productions & Studio Museum, Studio Lab is a participatory evening in which each of the three presenters are invited to share their work in an open format with audience members. We encourage audience members to respond and share their process and thoughts in return with panelists. This interactive engagement will investigate the unique process behind each artists’ creation as it applies to the themes of the exhibition. From moments of inspiration, to the frustrating times of creative block, to ways in which ideas of the American South (past, present and future) feed creativity, the artists will unlock the secrets of what fuels their artistic process.
